Arizona Toddler Found Alive in Morgue After Being Declared Dead

An 18-month-old boy from Arizona was found alive in a hospital morgue hours after a doctor declared him dead, according to police reports. The incident has raised significant questions regarding the medical evaluation processes in emergency situations.

The toddler was initially rushed to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center after being discovered in a family pool on Super Bowl Sunday in February. Despite attempts by police officers to alert medical staff about signs of life, the child was taken to the morgue.

Body camera footage reviewed by investigators revealed that officers observed multiple indications of life after the child was pronounced dead. A police report indicated that during a conversation between an officer and a doctor, the officer attempted to communicate that a pulse was detected, but the doctor dismissed these concerns, asserting his authority as a medical professional.

After the declaration of death, officers continued to document signs of life, including audible gasps. One officer reported that while moving the child's body to the morgue, another gasp was heard, which prompted further investigation.

Hours later, at approximately 11:52 p.m., medical examiners discovered that the toddler was breathing inside the morgue. He was subsequently transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital for treatment, where an MRI revealed he had sustained brain damage and would require lifelong care.

Mercy Gilbert Medical Center has expressed deep concern over the incident, stating they are conducting a thorough review of the care provided to the child. They emphasized their commitment to patient safety and improving care standards.

The doctor involved, identified as Dr. Aryan Toosi, is a licensed physician in Arizona, but details regarding his employment status at the hospital remain unclear. An attorney representing the family has declined to comment on the case.

The Gilbert Police Department has submitted the case to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office to determine if any charges will be filed against the parents related to the drowning incident.
