Baltimore Carjacking Crew Charged in Homicide and Crime Spree

Authorities in Baltimore have charged a group of young individuals in connection with a violent crime spree that included multiple carjackings and the fatal shooting of 38-year-old Jamal Ferguson last month. The incidents, which occurred primarily in the early morning hours, have raised significant concerns about public safety in the city.

On May 7, police were alerted to a possible connection between Ferguson's death and a crew that has been described as 'terrorizing' neighborhoods across Baltimore. A police dispatcher had previously warned officers to be on high alert for the suspects, who were believed to be involved in a series of carjackings and robberies since early April.

According to police officials, the crew, consisting of nine members, typically operated between 2 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. They were known to wear black clothing and ski masks while brandishing firearms, including at least one weapon equipped with a red laser sight. This pattern of behavior has instilled fear in local communities.

As of now, eight individuals have been arrested, while one remains at large. Among those charged are three adults—22-year-old Dash Hayne, 18-year-old Colekela Hamilton, and 21-year-old Mekhi Clark—who face numerous charges. The identities of the five minors involved, aged 15 to 17, are protected under Maryland law until their cases are determined to be handled in adult court.

Investigators linked the crew to various incidents, including a robbery in Federal Hill on April 23, where multiple assailants threatened a victim at gunpoint. Just minutes later, similar reports of robbery emerged in close proximity, suggesting a coordinated effort.

The violence culminated in Ferguson's death when he was approached by the group demanding his vehicle. After he attempted to escape, he was shot by the assailants.

Despite a general decrease in homicides in Baltimore, the city continues to grapple with high levels of violence. Carjackings and robberies have seen a decline compared to last year, but the recent spree has highlighted ongoing concerns.

Police have been proactive in warning residents to remain vigilant, particularly during the early morning hours.
