BALTIMORE — The Baltimore City Council is set to convene a hearing to assess the implications of heightened immigration enforcement in the city, particularly in relation to recent arrests made by federal agents.
Scheduled for Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Baltimore City Hall, the hearing follows the arrests of two individuals outside Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School on June 11, which drew significant backlash from local officials and raised alarms about the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) near educational institutions.
City officials, including representatives from Baltimore City Public Schools, the Baltimore City Health Department, the Mayor’s Office of Children and Family Success, and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, are expected to participate in the discussion. They will focus on how increased ICE operations have impacted students and their families within the community.
Councilman Mark Conway emphasized that the purpose of the hearing is to explore the wider ramifications of ICE activities throughout Baltimore.
