BALTIMORE — Baltimore City Public Schools announced on Friday that it will be forced to discontinue several educational programs, including tutoring and after-school activities, at 44 sites across the city. This decision comes in response to a significant reduction in federal pandemic relief funding.
The district revealed that it will not receive approximately $48 million in reimbursements for expenses that have already been incurred or are contractually obligated. As a result, the school system is now exploring additional cuts to balance its budget.
In addition to the program cuts, the City Schools will also pause the planned upgrades to door locking systems in secondary schools, citing the funding constraints. The district is actively seeking to identify other programs or projects that may be eliminated to address the financial shortfall.
Officials stated that vendors affected by these decisions will be notified directly by the district in the near future.
