Baltimore County Board of Education Chooses New Superintendent Pending State Approval

The Baltimore County Board of Education announced on Saturday that it has selected a candidate for the position of superintendent for Baltimore County Public Schools, pending approval from state officials.

The selection follows a public town hall and a series of interviews with four finalists. The name of the chosen candidate will be disclosed on Monday, provided the Maryland state superintendent gives the green light.

The new superintendent is set to assume leadership of one of the largest school districts in the nation, which serves approximately 108,000 students. The incoming superintendent will officially take on the role starting July 1.

The four candidates considered for the position included:

  • William “Bill” Heiser, currently the chief operating officer for the Anne Arundel County school system.
  • Penelope Martin-Knox, who serves as the superintendent for the Raytown C-2 School District in Missouri.
  • Edward Ryans, the associate superintendent for high schools and nontraditional programs in Prince George’s County Public Schools.
  • David Sovine, the superintendent of Washington County Public Schools.

As the new leader, the superintendent will face the challenge of addressing the concerns of approximately 20,000 staff members, who have expressed a desire for improved morale through better compensation, reduced job cuts, and smaller classroom sizes.
