Baltimore County Fire Stations Face $263K Cleanup Bill Amid Scandal

Baltimore County is facing a substantial bill for cleaning and new equipment, totaling approximately $263,400, following allegations involving a paramedic accused of inappropriate behavior.

The accusations against Christopher M. Carroll, a 36-year-old paramedic, include claims of masturbating and urinating on a colleague's property and food. Additionally, he is under investigation for allegedly filming pornography at county fire stations.

As a result of these allegations, Carroll is contesting a protective order related to his family situation. His attorney, Shannon Kowitz, did not provide any comments regarding the ongoing case.

Concerns about potential contamination have unsettled many first responders in the area. Reports indicate that some have sought legal advice due to fears of unknowingly ingesting bodily fluids. In response to these concerns, Baltimore County Fire Chief Joseph Dixon reassured staff in a recent email that while the medical risk is minimal, their peace of mind is paramount. He ordered hazmat cleaning for all 25 career stations in the department.

Through a Maryland Public Information Act request, estimates from local contractors revealed the costs associated with deep-cleaning the facilities and replacing over two dozen ice machines. These measures were taken in December as part of the county's response to the scandal.

Dakarai Turner, a spokesperson for Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier, emphasized the county's commitment to ensuring a safe work environment for all employees, particularly first responders. Turner stated that the swift actions taken were necessary to protect the health and dignity of those who serve the community.
