Baltimore County has announced a partnership with the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) to provide free access to pool facilities at its Essex, Dundalk, and Catonsville campuses for local residents this summer.
This initiative, which began last year at the Essex campus, aims to give residents an opportunity to swim without the high costs associated with private swim clubs, as the county does not have its own outdoor swimming pools like Baltimore City.
John Reed, coordinator of the CCBC Wellness Department, noted that the program's expansion was a response to positive community feedback and high turnout last summer. He stated, "The response has been phenomenal. A lot of people have been coming out, especially on these hot days, to get a little reprieve from the weather."
Donna Read, a local swimmer who frequents both the Essex and Dundalk locations, expressed her appreciation for the program, saying it has allowed her to engage with the community in a way she might not have pursued otherwise.
The pools are supervised by lifeguards, and life jackets are available for those who need them. The welcoming environment has been highlighted by users, with Read commenting on the cleanliness and friendly atmosphere of the facilities.
Community hours are limited to a certain number of participants, and residents are encouraged to register online. For capacity inquiries, individuals can contact the hotline at 443-840-4500.
