A Baltimore County Police officer, identified as Officer P. Catalfamo, has been released from the Maryland Shock Trauma Center after being shot twice, including once in the head, during an incident in Pikesville earlier this month.
Late Wednesday night, Officer Catalfamo was escorted out of the hospital by family members and fellow officers. Baltimore County officials have chosen not to disclose further details about his treatment and recovery, respecting his privacy during this time.
In a statement, officials praised Officer Catalfamo for his strength and resilience throughout his recovery process.
According to family members, Catalfamo's upbringing as a Boy Scout instilled in him values of service, leadership, and integrity that have been crucial in his role as a police officer.
The suspect in the shooting, identified as Shaka Kamara, has been charged with multiple offenses, including attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm as a felon. The incident occurred on June 7 when Officer Catalfamo responded to a report of indecent exposure at the Milford Mill Gwynn Falls Trail in Villa Nova Park.
Upon arriving at the scene, Officer Catalfamo encountered Kamara, who fled, leading to a brief foot chase. During the pursuit, Kamara shot Officer Catalfamo before escaping further.
As Kamara fled, he allegedly threatened a couple on the trail and robbed one of them of a firearm. Additional officers arrived shortly thereafter, and a confrontation ensued, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between Kamara and the police, during which both Kamara and a bystander were injured.
All three individuals—Officer Catalfamo, Kamara, and the civilian—were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Kamara is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on July 1.
