BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — On Tuesday, the Baltimore County school board made a decision to modify the school calendar in response to a recent agreement with the Teachers Association of Baltimore County.
As part of the negotiations that took place last month, the district and the union reached a deal that includes the day before Thanksgiving as a half-day for educators, designated for both professional development and mental health. This arrangement effectively grants teachers a half-day off.
According to Joelle Bielski, the director of the Department of Staff Relations and Employee Performance Management, the initial agreement would have extended the school year by an extra day, as state law mandates a minimum of 180 school days.
In light of this, Bielski presented a revised proposal to the board, taking into account feedback from teachers and the input of the new union president, Kelly Olds. The updated plan designates both November 14 and February 20 as early dismissal days, allowing staff additional time for professional development. Additionally, the day before Thanksgiving, November 26, will be a half-day for students, coinciding with an early release for teachers.
