BALTIMORE — A 50-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend, a 56-year-old woman, in East Baltimore.
According to charging documents, Toi Stukes was apprehended after police responded to reports of a stabbing at an apartment complex located in the 400 block of East 25th Street on June 20.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Shonda Singleton lying on the floor with multiple stab wounds. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Witnesses at the scene informed police that Stukes resided in the same complex as Singleton. When officers attempted to reach Stukes at his apartment, they received no response. They subsequently obtained a key from maintenance staff and entered the unit, where Stukes was found inside.
Stukes was taken into custody, with officers noting that he had blood on him but no visible injuries. He appeared to be under the influence of a substance and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
One witness reported hearing a loud argument coming from Singleton's apartment. Upon checking, the witness saw Stukes leaving the apartment with a large knife in his pocket. This witness later identified Stukes in a photo array provided by police.
Another witness corroborated the account, stating that Stukes assaulted Singleton after she declined to pay him for assistance in setting up her new phone. The witness observed Stukes strike Singleton multiple times, pull her hair, and ultimately stab her.
Police discovered a trail of blood leading from Singleton's apartment to Stukes' unit through the stairwell.
Stukes now faces charges of first-degree and second-degree murder, as well as first-degree and second-degree assault. After receiving medical treatment, he was taken to Central Booking.
