A Baltimore man has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms for the fatal shooting of two women in a tragic incident that occurred in September 2020. Dandre Woods-Bethel, 29, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and related charges following a court trial in June.
On the evening of September 12, 2020, Woods-Bethel instructed the mother of his child and their three-year-old son to go to the basement of their home on Clifton Park Terrace. He then exited the house and opened fire on a group of individuals gathered on a nearby porch, resulting in the deaths of 46-year-old Julie Rice and 23-year-old Michelle Green.
During the sentencing hearing at the Elijah E. Cummings Courthouse, Jacqueline Boone, Rice’s aunt, expressed her ongoing struggle to cope with the loss of her loved ones. She stated that while she hopes to find forgiveness, she is not yet at that point. Boone emphasized the importance of accountability, noting that the sentencing provides some relief for the families affected by the tragedy.
Circuit Judge Paul E. Alpert acknowledged the complexities of the case, particularly Woods-Bethel's reported mental health issues, which were determined to be drug-induced delusions. Despite this, the judge sentenced Woods-Bethel to two life sentences plus an additional 28 years. Alpert expressed his hope that Woods-Bethel could find relief from his delusions.
Assistant State’s Attorney Victoria Yeager urged the court to impose a harsher sentence, arguing that Woods-Bethel posed a significant threat to society. Yeager detailed how Woods-Bethel had resumed firing after his gun jammed and made alarming statements after the incident, indicating a lack of remorse.
Woods-Bethel’s defense attorney argued for a more lenient sentence, citing his mental illness and requesting treatment at the Patuxent Institution. However, Woods-Bethel himself acknowledged his actions, stating he was not in his right state of mind during the incident.
The tragic loss of Rice and Green has left a lasting impact on their families, who now seek to heal from the profound grief caused by this senseless act of violence.
