Baltimore Mayor Appoints Dr. Michelle Taylor as New Health Commissioner

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has announced the appointment of Dr. Michelle Taylor as the new health commissioner for the city, effective this August. Taylor will be responsible for guiding health policies and initiatives that affect Baltimore residents.

Mayor Scott praised Dr. Taylor as a distinguished leader and expressed his gratitude for her decision to join the city's health department. He emphasized her shared commitment to enhancing affordable health resources across all neighborhoods in Baltimore. The mayor highlighted that Taylor will play a crucial role in the city's ongoing efforts to combat the opioid crisis, as well as to expand both physical and mental health services.

Prior to her appointment, Dr. Taylor served as the division director for health services in Shelby County, Tennessee. In addition to her public health experience, she is a residency-trained flight surgeon with the Tennessee Air National Guard.

Dr. Taylor holds a doctorate in public health from Johns Hopkins University, where she spent her first two years of graduate studies. She expressed her excitement about returning to Baltimore to serve the community and to support the Baltimore City Health Department's mission for equitable health access.

Her appointment follows a period of instability in the health commissioner's role. Simone Johnson had been serving in an interim capacity for nearly a year after Dr. Ihouma Emengua was dismissed last July amid a criminal investigation related to her dual employment.
