Baltimore Performance Artist Charged After Nude Independence Day Stunt

BALTIMORE, MD — A performance artist was arrested on Independence Day after staging a nude demonstration atop a pedestal in the Little Italy neighborhood, resulting in charges of indecent exposure, assault, and resisting arrest.

The artist, identified as 31-year-old F. Hambleton Sonnenfeld, commonly known as 'Ham,' was removed from the pedestal by police using a cherry picker. This location holds significance as it was previously the site of a statue of Christopher Columbus, which was taken down six years ago and later reinstalled at the White House.

In a recent interview, Sonnenfeld expressed that the timing of his performance was intentional, aiming to celebrate Italian culture amid ongoing discussions about the historical context of such symbols. He described his act as a way to explore the current meaning of freedom.

The artist reflected on the conclusion of his performance, where he found himself restrained on the ground, surrounded by police officers, describing it as a striking representation of the complexities surrounding the concept of freedom.
