With a heat wave affecting Maryland, Baltimore is experiencing an uptick in illegal dirt bike activity, prompting city police to enhance enforcement measures. Residents have expressed concerns about the unpredictability and danger posed by these riders on the roads.
One local man noted that the presence of dirt bikes makes driving feel less secure. A woman echoed this sentiment, suggesting that riders should have designated lanes to prevent traffic disruptions. "They’re in the way. They need their own lane or something or a designated spot for them to ride because they be in the way," she said, emphasizing the risks involved for both drivers and riders.
Some community members are willing to tolerate the dirt bikes as long as they do not interfere with regular traffic. A local man mentioned, "I don’t like to be in traffic with them, but as long as they’re not interfering with me or other cars."
In response to growing complaints, Baltimore police launched an operation targeting illegal dirt bike gatherings, particularly in the Herring Run Park area after receiving tips. Recently, enforcement actions were conducted in the Southern and Northern districts, with video footage showing a large group of riders on Reisterstown Road near Druid Hill Park. Police reported seizing at least ten dirt bikes and are actively working to identify those involved in past incidents, pursuing both criminal and traffic-related charges.
While police have not disclosed specific charges filed or details regarding seized items, they did issue civil citations to two gas stations accused of fueling illegal dirt bike riders. One citation was given to the Crown gas station located on West Patapsco Avenue. The owner, Mike Goitom, is contesting the citation, claiming it is unjust. He stated, "It’s not fair, it’s not fair," and shared that his employee attempted to prevent riders from filling up by shutting down a pump.
The fines for such citations can range from $250 to $1,000, with Goitom indicating he may face a $250 penalty but is fighting the charge.
