Baltimore Police have reported significant progress in their efforts to combat illegal dirt bike and ATV use, having seized a total of 45 dirt bikes and 16 ATVs since the beginning of the year.
In a recent operation, officers confiscated 10 dirt bikes from a large gathering of riders at the intersection of Reisterstown Road and Druid Park Drive in north Baltimore. Video footage captured by the Baltimore Sun showed hundreds of riders in the area before police intervened.
Additionally, two gas stations in South Baltimore received civil citations for supplying fuel to participants in the illegal dirt bike activities. The locations cited were 101 West Patapsco Avenue and 3601 Potee Street.
Earlier this month, police also seized 11 dirt bikes and ATVs during enforcement operations around Herring Run Park. This follows a recent incident in which a police officer called for backup after confronting a man on a dirt bike in the Baltimore Peninsula, resulting in the arrest of a 33-year-old.
Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates has noted ongoing discussions with police leadership regarding enforcement strategies for illegal dirt bike riding, which has been a persistent issue in the city. Bates expressed concerns earlier this year about the number of citations being issued for such offenses, but stated that there has been an increase in citations recently.
In 2022, the city enacted an ordinance imposing fines and potential jail time for illegal dirt bike riding and street racing, highlighting the city's commitment to addressing this public safety concern. The Baltimore Police Department is currently investigating whether any of the seized vehicles had been reported stolen.
