Baltimore Safe Streets Employee Charged Federally After Shooting Incident

BALTIMORE — Antoine Burton, a worker for the Baltimore Safe Streets initiative, has been charged federally after his arrest in June on attempted murder allegations linked to a shooting on Park Heights Avenue.

According to an affidavit, Burton was apprehended after police responded to reports of gunfire in the 4400 block of Park Heights Avenue, where they discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

Subsequent investigation led officers to the 2400 block of Loyola North Way, where Burton was located and taken into custody. Authorities recovered a loaded handgun from him.

Court documents reveal that Burton had previously been convicted of a crime, which legally barred him from possessing a firearm. In 2002, he was sentenced to 10 years for first-degree assault.

The affidavit states that there is probable cause to believe that Burton possessed a firearm on June 7, 2026, despite his prior conviction.

In a statement regarding Burton's arrest, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed his outrage, labeling the actions of the Safe Streets employee as a betrayal of the program's mission. Scott emphasized the importance of maintaining trust in community violence intervention efforts, stating, “Nobody should ever resort to violence to resolve conflict, especially someone tasked with promoting peace.”

The Safe Streets program, established in 2007, aims to mitigate gun violence in Baltimore through community engagement and intervention strategies.
