BALTIMORE — Antoine Burton, an employee of the Baltimore Safe Streets initiative, has been charged federally following his arrest in June on attempted murder accusations connected to a shooting.
The incident occurred in the 4400 block of Park Heights Avenue, where police discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Court documents reveal that Burton was found in possession of a firearm despite a prior conviction that legally barred him from having one.
Burton's criminal history includes a 2002 conviction for first-degree assault, for which he received a 10-year prison sentence. According to charging documents, there is probable cause to believe that he possessed a firearm on June 7, 2026, despite being prohibited from doing so due to his past.
Officers tracked Burton to the 2400 block of Loyola North Way, where he was apprehended, and a loaded handgun was recovered. During the arrest, he allegedly indicated that he would not conceal information about the firearm, suggesting it was the same weapon used in the shooting.
The Safe Streets program, established in 2007, aims to mitigate gun violence in Baltimore. Following Burton's arrest, Mayor Brandon Scott expressed his outrage, calling the actions of the Safe Streets worker a disgrace. He emphasized the importance of maintaining trust within the community and the necessity for peace over violence.
