BMORE BUS Plan Aims to Enhance Baltimore's Transit System

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has released the BMORE BUS plan, which outlines a strategy for enhancing bus services throughout the Baltimore region. This initiative follows a visioning process that began in May 2024, with draft recommendations developed last fall.

The finalized plan proposes to increase bus frequency across the network, aiming for headways of 30 minutes or less, with many routes operating under 15 minutes. Additionally, it includes extensions to various bus routes and introduces new service options such as on-demand microtransit.

To inform the plan, the MTA engaged with community members, collecting feedback from both riders and non-riders. The agency reviewed travel data alongside nearly 1,000 public comments, which highlighted the need for improved frequency as a key concern among users.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld emphasized the importance of the bus system, stating, “The bus is the workhorse of MTA's transit system and currently carries more than double the number of riders of all of the agency's other modes combined.” He noted that the BMORE BUS plan serves as a roadmap for future enhancements, supported by increased transportation revenues aimed at making significant investments in transit.

Implementation of the BMORE BUS plan will rely on securing additional funding and resources, which includes the construction of a new fifth bus division facility. With this strategic framework in place, the MTA is working towards establishing a more equitable, efficient, and accessible bus network for the Baltimore area.

Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold reiterated the commitment to improving rider experiences, stating, “Fast, frequent, and reliable service are at the core of what riders want from their bus system.” She affirmed the agency’s dedication to advocating for the necessary resources to realize this vision.
