BPD and PERF Launch Summer Internship Program with Local HBCUs

Baltimore's Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) and the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) have partnered with Morgan State University and Coppin State University to launch a summer internship program aimed at engaging students in police operations.

The initiative was announced by key figures including PERF Executive Director Chuck Wexler, BPD Commissioner Michael Harrison, and the presidents of both universities during a press conference at Coppin State.

The program will offer eight students or recent graduates from the two HBCUs a unique opportunity to work within the BPD, gaining firsthand experience in policing while providing valuable insights on improving community relations.

“This pilot program is a chance for students to learn about the complexities of policing and contribute to building trust within communities,” Wexler stated. He emphasized the importance of HBCU graduates in advancing the field of policing to better reflect diversity and inclusion.

Each intern will receive a $10,000 stipend for a ten-week internship, funded by a donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Interns will be immersed in various BPD divisions, including Operations, Media Relations, and Forensic Sciences, and will participate in ride-alongs and visits to community organizations.

David Wilson, president of Morgan State University, highlighted the importance of paid internships in providing students with both experience and exposure to diverse career paths within law enforcement, extending beyond traditional roles.

Commissioner Harrison expressed enthusiasm about mentoring the interns, stating that such opportunities can pave the way for future careers in policing.

At the conclusion of the program, interns will complete a capstone project that includes a written report and presentation, focusing on specific functions within their assigned areas.
