Bryan Johnson Pleads Guilty to Murder in Edmondson Village Shooting

Baltimore resident Bryan Johnson has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and related charges in connection with a mass shooting that occurred at the Edmondson Village Shopping Center on January 4, 2023. The incident left one teenager dead and four others injured, prompting widespread community outrage and calls for reform.

During a court hearing on Friday, Johnson, who is now 20 years old, admitted to his involvement in the shooting that claimed the life of 16-year-old Deanta Dorsey, a sophomore at Edmondson-Westside High School. Johnson's plea was made before Baltimore Circuit Judge Lynn Stewart Mays, who is set to impose a sentence of 25 years in prison, suspending all but that term.

According to court documents, Johnson and his cousin, Daaon Spears, approached a Popeyes restaurant within the shopping center and opened fire before fleeing the scene. At the time of the shooting, Johnson was just 16 years old. Earlier this year, Spears was acquitted of first-degree murder and related charges in connection with the same incident.

Dorsey was remembered as a gentle and caring individual who enjoyed playing basketball and video games. His family described him affectionately as “Dink.”

Johnson is currently being held without bail at the Metropolitan Transition Center as he awaits sentencing, which is scheduled for October 15.

The Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office has not yet commented on the case.
