Bus Collision in Pikesville Leaves 28 Injured

A bus accident in Pikesville, a suburb of Baltimore, occurred on Wednesday night, injuring at least 28 people. The Baltimore County Fire Department classified the incident as a mass casualty event.

The collision involved a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus that struck multiple vehicles before crashing into a building located at 500 West Franklin Street. According to Jerimiah Moerke, an MTA spokesperson, the bus first hit a Lexus, then a Nissan, before ultimately coming to a stop against the structure.

One individual involved in the crash is reported to be in critical condition. Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore City Fire Department, noted that the number of injured parties warranted the escalation to a level one mass casualty response.

Emergency crews successfully extricated the bus driver from the vehicle, which was wedged into the building. All injured individuals were promptly transported to local hospitals for medical attention.

The Baltimore City Fire Department's special rescue operations team evaluated the affected four-story apartment building and confirmed that its support beams remained intact. However, they deemed the first floor unsafe for occupancy, leading to its temporary condemnation.

Authorities are advising motorists to steer clear of the area as emergency personnel continue their operations. An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway, involving MTA Police, the Baltimore City Fire Department, and building inspectors.
