A bus accident in Pikesville, a suburb of Baltimore, has resulted in injuries to at least 28 people as of Wednesday night, July 8. The Baltimore County Fire Department has classified the incident as a mass casualty event.
The crash involved a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus that collided with multiple vehicles before ultimately crashing into a building located at 500 West Franklin Street. Initial reports indicate that the bus first struck a Lexus and then a Nissan.
According to Jerimiah Moerke, a spokesperson for the MTA, the bus driver was successfully extricated from the vehicle, which was lodged against the building. Emergency responders transported all injured individuals to a nearby hospital for medical attention, with one person reported to be in critical condition.
Kevin Cartwright, the communications director for the Baltimore City Fire Department, noted that the situation warranted escalation to a level one mass casualty event due to the number of patients involved. Fire crews have also conducted an assessment of the structural integrity of the impacted four-story apartment building, determining that the support beams remain intact, although the first floor has been temporarily condemned.
Authorities are advising motorists to avoid the area as emergency personnel continue their operations. The investigation into the cause of the crash is still active, with MTA Police, Baltimore City Fire Department, and building inspectors currently on the scene.
