BALTIMORE CITY, Md. — The Baltimore City Fire Department is making strides to inspire the next generation of female firefighters through a unique initiative called Camp Spark.
This two-day camp provides young women with hands-on training alongside experienced firefighters and EMS personnel. Participants engage in various activities, including hose handling, CPR training, and live firefighting simulations.
Deputy Chief Khalilah Yancey emphasized the camp's mission to empower young women who may feel discouraged about pursuing a career in firefighting. She noted that many participants initially consider becoming EMS workers due to concerns about their physical capabilities for firefighting.
“Sometimes for women, it’s just a different technique,” Yancey explained. “You just have to learn that you need upper body strength and different things like that. You can do everything within this job. You just have to have the drive to want to do it.”
In addition to skill-building, the camp encourages participants to contribute to their communities by sharing fire safety knowledge with those around them. Yancey hopes that the skills learned will have a lasting impact on the young women involved.
“You can’t be what you can’t see, right? So this is a good introductory way for women to know that they can be a firefighter as well,” she added.
