Carroll County State's Attorney to Leave Maryland, Citing Political Discontent

Haven Shoemaker, the State's Attorney for Carroll County, has declared he will leave Maryland after his term concludes this December, citing a deep disillusionment with the state's current political climate.

Having spent his entire life in Maryland, Shoemaker has held various positions in local and state government over the past 61 years. In a candid statement, he expressed that he feels Maryland has become a 'lost cause' under the leadership of Governor Wes Moore and the Democratic majority in the General Assembly.

His decision to relocate to North Carolina is fueled by several legislative changes that he believes have undermined public safety. Among these is the Youth Charging Reform Act, which prevents 16- and 17-year-olds from being automatically charged as adults for certain offenses. Shoemaker criticized this as part of a trend of 'criminal coddling' legislation emerging from Annapolis.

Additionally, he pointed to immigration reforms like the Community Trust Act, which limits cooperation between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as another reason for his departure. The recent ban on the 287G program, which previously allowed local authorities to work with ICE, also contributed to his frustration.

Financial concerns have also played a significant role in Shoemaker's decision. He cited the $1.6 billion in new or increased taxes and fees enacted last year as detrimental to the state's economic health. He lamented that despite these tax increases, Maryland continues to face a structural deficit.

In his remarks, Shoemaker urged state officials to reevaluate their policies, warning that many residents share his sentiments and are leaving the state in search of better circumstances. He concluded that his departure is a direct result of the current political landscape and the elected officials shaping it.
