City Council Member Proposes Plan to Tackle Open-Air Drug Markets in Baltimore

BALTIMORE — In a proactive move to address the ongoing issue of open-air drug markets in Baltimore, City Council Member Mark Conway has announced his own plan aimed at dismantling these operations.

After waiting over a year for a unified city approach, Conway has developed this strategy as a foundational step, drawing from extensive discussions with community stakeholders. His initiative seeks to halt the deterioration of neighborhoods and confront the addiction crisis facing many residents.

Conway shared his personal experiences with the drug crisis, noting, "I've personally come into contact with a number of folks who have overdosed in front of my office. Fortunately, we had naloxone nearby, or we had an emergency responder there get there in time." He emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, "We know this is an issue that we're struggling with in our communities, and it's incumbent upon us as members of the city council and the mayor and the council president to figure out what we can do to resolve those issues."

In his call to action, Conway is urging the mayor and various city agencies to prioritize cooperation over political divisions in order to effectively implement the proposed plan.
