Columbia Apartment Fire Claims Life of 63-Year-Old Man

Authorities have confirmed the identity of a man who died following a fire in his Columbia apartment on Tuesday evening. The incident took place in the 11500 block of Little Patuxent Parkway around 5:45 p.m.

Firefighters from the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a smoke odor emanating from the building. Upon arrival, they found David Richardson, 63, in cardiac arrest and discovered a fire in the kitchen.

Emergency crews were able to extinguish the flames within approximately ten minutes and attempted to revive Richardson, but he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.

Samantha Stanton, a spokesperson for the Fire Department, indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the fire was likely caused by an electrical malfunction.

This tragic incident marks the second fatal fire in Howard County this year. Earlier in January, a 70-year-old woman named Sheila Brookshire lost her life due to injuries sustained in a townhouse fire in Columbia. In 2025, there was one recorded fatal fire in Jessup.
