In a tragic incident on Thursday afternoon, a fire tore through a rowhome in the 2200 block of Guilford Avenue, claiming the life of a woman and leaving the North Baltimore community in shock.
Witnesses described the sound of the fire as reminiscent of an explosion or a car crash. Jeff Smith, a neighbor who was on a conference call at the time, looked out to see flames shooting from the second-story window of the home.
As the fire spread rapidly, emergency responders, including dozens of firefighters and police officers, arrived on the scene, battling thick smoke that engulfed the block. Tim “Moth” Sharma, another resident, recalled the chaos as neighbors rushed to evacuate their homes, carrying children and pets.
In the midst of the emergency, firefighters forced their way into an adjacent home to rescue a dog, which Smith cared for until its owner returned, distraught.
The rowhome, which had been in the same family since 1958, was a significant part of the neighborhood’s history. Residents noted that the woman who lost her life was born there, deepening the community’s sense of loss.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames, but the interior of the home was severely damaged, complicating the search for the missing woman. Emergency crews also had to address a potential gas leak, cutting into the street to shut off gas lines.
By early Friday morning, the woman’s body was discovered in the wreckage, prompting further grief among neighbors who had known her for years.
In the aftermath, several homes nearby were evacuated, and the Red Cross is assisting six families affected by the fire. The site of the blaze has been fenced off, and debris from the structure has been cleared away.
As the community mourns, residents have come together to support one another, with plans for fundraisers and safety checks on fire alarms in the area. Smith expressed his intentions to help those impacted, while Sharma voiced concerns about the fire's rapid spread in closely-knit rowhome structures.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, but as of Saturday afternoon, the identity of the deceased woman has not been publicly released.
