Court Upholds Affordable Care Act Protections Against Trump Administration Changes

Baltimore, Md. – A significant ruling from the U.S. District Court of Maryland has upheld the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by blocking a controversial health care rule proposed by the Trump-Vance administration. The court's decision supports a coalition comprising the City of Columbus, Baltimore's Mayor and City Council, the City of Chicago, Doctors for America, and the Main Street Alliance, represented by Democracy Forward.

The contested rule, termed the “Marketplace Integrity and Affordability” regulation, was deemed unlawful for imposing new fees and weakening essential coverage standards. The court's ruling is seen as a major win for the coalition, which argued that the rule could have stripped health insurance from over 2.2 million individuals and increased costs for working families.

Previously, the court had issued a preliminary injunction to halt the implementation of the rule. This latest ruling solidifies that injunction, ensuring that the ACA's protections for affordable health care remain intact for millions relying on it.

Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein emphasized the importance of this ruling, stating that it safeguards the health care needs of millions, including many in Ohio. Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott also expressed his commitment to continue fighting against any attempts to undermine the ACA.

Richard Trent, Executive Director of the Main Street Alliance, highlighted that the ruling is beneficial for small business owners and their employees, as it prevents increased costs and barriers to health coverage that could hinder business growth.

Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward, praised the court's decision as a victory for working families and reiterated the organization's dedication to defending affordable health care access.

The case is officially titled City of Columbus et al. v. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., et al., with legal representation from Democracy Forward's team, including Joel McElvain, Cortney Robinson Henderson, and Christine Coogle.
