Dispute Arises Over Alleged Endorsement of Ivan Bates by Mayor Brandon Scott

Baltimore State’s Attorney Ivan Bates recently asserted that he has received an endorsement from Mayor Brandon Scott for his reelection campaign. This claim was highlighted at a campaign fundraiser in Mount Vernon, where a poster board displayed a list of Bates’ supporters, including Scott’s name alongside prominent Democrats such as Governor Wes Moore and U.S. Senators.

However, the endorsement's authenticity has come into question. Following inquiries from local media, both Bates' and Scott's campaigns declined to comment on the record. The mayor's office later clarified that while discussions regarding an endorsement took place, no official endorsement has been made.

“While we were approached for an endorsement and indicated that further discussions are necessary, the mayor has not officially endorsed the state’s attorney,” stated Bryan Doherty, spokesperson for Scott's campaign.

In response, Bates’ campaign spokesperson, Hassan Giordano, challenged the Scott campaign's interpretation. He emphasized that Bates had indeed sought the mayor's endorsement and implied that the mayor's reluctance to support Bates' efforts could reflect on his commitment to the city.

The situation is particularly noteworthy given the historical tensions between the two officials, especially regarding public safety initiatives. Their relationship has seen significant strain since Bates won his primary election in 2022, leading to public disagreements and even threats of legal action. Recently, however, there have been signs of a thaw in their relationship, with both parties engaging in discussions to improve collaboration.

If Scott were to endorse Bates officially, it could mark a significant turning point in their often-contentious relationship, signaling a potential reconciliation in their approaches to governance.
