Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) has announced the appointment of Dr. William Heiser as its new superintendent. Heiser, who is currently serving as the chief operating officer for Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), brings over 20 years of educational experience from various Maryland school systems.
Heiser's selection follows the announcement of Dr. Myriam Rogers' planned retirement, effective July 1, 2026. Rogers has been at the helm of BCPS since 2019 and will conclude her tenure three years into her four-year contract.
In a statement regarding his new role, Heiser expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing his commitment to serve the community and collaborate with the Board of Education. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a student-centered approach and building upon the achievements made under Dr. Rogers’ leadership.
At AACPS, Heiser oversaw a student population of more than 85,000 across 130 schools and managed a substantial capital budget of $195 million. His responsibilities included leading the school system's redistricting process and supervising significant construction projects.
Dr. Mark Bedell, superintendent of AACPS, praised Heiser's dedication and innovative leadership, expressing confidence in his ability to lead BCPS effectively.
Heiser's career also includes serving as president of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Baltimore City and as principal at both Catonsville High School and North County High School. He was recognized as Maryland High School Principal of the Year in 2013.
His appointment comes after a comprehensive nationwide search conducted by Ray and Associates, which garnered interest from numerous qualified candidates. Jane Lichter, chair of the Baltimore County school board, noted Heiser's passion for education and commitment to fostering equitable school communities as key factors in his selection.
Heiser holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education from Loyola University Maryland, along with a doctoral degree in education from Morgan State University. He resides in Anne Arundel County with his family.
The finalization of Heiser's contract is pending, and he will be formally appointed during the school board's meeting on June 24 at 6:30 p.m.
