Dr. William Heiser Appointed Superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools

Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) has announced the appointment of Dr. William Heiser as its next superintendent. Heiser, who is currently the chief operating officer of Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), will officially begin his role on July 1, 2026. He succeeds Dr. Myriam Rogers, who is retiring.

With nearly 30 years of experience in educational leadership across various Maryland school districts, Heiser has a proven track record in managing large-scale operations. At AACPS, he oversees the operations for the state’s fourth-largest school district, which serves over 85,000 students and manages a capital budget of $195 million, including major construction projects and redistricting initiatives.

Heiser expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I am deeply humbled and thankful for the opportunity to serve as the next superintendent of this incredible school system.” He emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the needs of students and staff are prioritized.

Before his tenure at AACPS, Heiser was the president of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Baltimore City from 2015 to 2023. He has also held principal positions at Catonsville High School and North County High School, earning recognition as Maryland High School Principal of the Year in 2013.

Dr. Mark Bedell, the current superintendent of AACPS, commended Heiser's selection as a thoughtful and innovative leader, reflecting on his extensive career in education.

The decision to appoint Heiser followed a nationwide search facilitated by the executive search firm Ray and Associates, and it received approval from Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carey Wright.

Jane Lichter, chair of the Baltimore County Board of Education, highlighted Heiser's dedication to academic excellence and equitable school communities. The Board is eager to collaborate with him to advance the school system.

Heiser holds both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education from Loyola University Maryland, along with a doctorate in education from Morgan State University. He resides in Anne Arundel County with his family.

His appointment is pending final contract negotiations, with a formal approval expected at the Board of Education meeting on June 24.
