Eight individuals were injured in a shooting at a Fourth of July cookout held near Coney Island beach, according to police reports.
The incident occurred Saturday night in the courtyard of an apartment complex located just a block away from the iconic Coney Island boardwalk. This location is also near where the Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest took place earlier that day.
Among the injured is a 21-year-old woman who is currently in critical condition. The remaining victims are reported to be stable and expected to recover, as stated by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
The shooting was allegedly carried out by a suspect wearing a black mask, who fired into the courtyard where families were gathered for the celebration. The assailant fled the scene, but authorities were able to recover a firearm linked to the incident.
Among the wounded are four children aged 6, 7, 12, and 14. Commissioner Tisch noted that there had been no prior disturbances reported at the gathering before the shooting.
