After a lengthy wait of 70 years, Elkridge is set to establish its own high school. Howard County Executive Calvin Ball made the announcement on Wednesday regarding the progress of High School #14, which will be located at Troy Park.
The county has officially acquired the necessary property for the new school, following a thorough search that identified this site as the most suitable location. The acquisition is part of the county's efforts to meet state land conversion requirements, ensuring that the land is utilized effectively for educational purposes.
Troy Park is already owned by Howard County, allowing for the efficient use of public land to address the educational needs of the community. Ball emphasized the importance of collaboration with community members, school leaders, and the Board of Education in this endeavor. He stated, "Today, we continue to take another important step toward investing in the future of our schools with the progress of High School #14 in Elkridge."
Next week, Ball plans to submit legislation to the Howard County Council to transfer the 48.64 acres of undeveloped land at Troy Park to the Howard County Board of Education. This move will facilitate the integration of the new high school into the school system’s long-term planning.
Following this legislative step, the county will initiate the design development phase for the school. This project is part of Ball's broader initiative to modernize and enhance the Howard County Public Schools.
Board of Education Member Meg Ricks expressed gratitude to the advocates who have worked for decades to bring a high school to Elkridge. She noted, "Securing this land will not only benefit the Elkridge community, but it will benefit the entire school system and county."
