Evacuations Ordered After Structural Issues at NYC High-Rise

A high-rise building under construction in New York City has led to the evacuation of surrounding structures following the discovery of buckled structural columns on the 21st floor. The incident caused bricks to fall onto the street below, raising safety concerns among local authorities.

Inspectors from the fire department reported finding multiple cracks and sagging floors on the affected level of the 33-story building. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and all workers at the site were accounted for.

As a precaution, nearby buildings in Midtown Manhattan were also evacuated. This included a local school with approximately 400 students, which was cleared to ensure the safety of children and staff.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety in the area. He stated that the Department of Buildings' inspectors and engineers were on-site to assess and secure the construction site effectively.

In response to the situation, authorities have closed most of 42nd and 43rd Streets between 1st and 3rd Avenues to both pedestrians and vehicles.
