Officials in Anne Arundel County have announced the establishment of a 150-foot safety perimeter surrounding the Empire Towers office building on Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie. This precautionary measure was implemented on Friday evening after concerns arose regarding the structural integrity of the 10-story building.
Approximately 100 individuals were evacuated from the Empire Towers on Thursday afternoon when first responders discovered that the parking garage beneath the building had been compromised. As a result, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department declared the structure unsafe.
In light of the situation, several roads in the vicinity were closed over the weekend to ensure public safety. Drivers traveling on Crain Highway and southbound Ritchie Highway are advised to use detours via 8th Avenue and Route 648. Additionally, southbound lanes on Route 2 are partially closed, which may result in traffic slowdowns.
The Empire Towers houses various businesses, including the American Red Cross blood donation center. Due to the current conditions, officials have prohibited entry into the building.
