HOLLYWOOD, Md. — A father has died after bravely entering a burning home in search of his 10-year-old son, as reported by the State Fire Marshal's Office.
The incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. on Sunday at a residence located on Thornbury Drive in St. Mary's County. Firefighters responded to urgent calls indicating that a child was trapped inside the home.
Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy flames engulfing the two-story structure. After the fire was extinguished, they discovered the father's body on the second floor. Fortunately, the child had managed to escape safely.
According to initial investigations by the State Fire Marshal's Office, the fire may have been sparked by ground-based sparklers that were improperly disposed of in a trash can located on a screened-in deck.
Acting State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray expressed condolences for the family, stating, "Our hearts are with this family as they face an unimaginable loss." He emphasized the ongoing investigation and the importance of safely handling fireworks.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal cautions Maryland residents that used fireworks can still pose a fire risk long after they seem extinguished. It is advised to soak spent fireworks in water and place them in a metal or noncombustible container outdoors for complete cooling before disposal.
