A fire ignited on Monday evening at the vacant Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary/Middle School in Northwest Baltimore.
Fire crews arrived at the scene around 10 p.m. to find flames visible through a window on the building's upper floor. Responders utilized ladders to reach the fire and extinguish the blaze.
The school, located on Greenspring Avenue, was closed in June 2020 due to a significant drop in student enrollment and deteriorating infrastructure. The Baltimore City Public School Board had previously voted in January 2019 to shut down five schools, including this one, as part of a broader effort to address challenges within the school system.
As of now, details regarding the cause of the fire have not been disclosed, and the Baltimore City Fire Department has been contacted for further information.
