A fire at a commercial building in the South Clifton Park area of Baltimore led to injuries for both a civilian and a firefighter on Thursday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the blaze in the 2000 block of N. Rose Street around 10:45 a.m. Due to the intensity of the fire, authorities escalated the response to a three-alarm fire, but firefighters were able to bring the situation under control.
The civilian injured in the incident was transported to a local hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the firefighter involved was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by relevant authorities.
Fire safety data indicates that Maryland has experienced at least nine fatal fires in 2026 thus far. In comparison, 11 fire fatalities were reported by the same time in 2025, while 2024 saw a total of 45 fire-related deaths across the state. Notably, the Baltimore City Fire Department reported a significant 50% reduction in fire fatalities in 2025.
The first fire fatality of 2026 in Baltimore occurred in mid-January, when a 65-year-old man lost his life in a rowhome incident. A 33-year-old who escaped from that fire sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Additionally, just days prior to this incident, a Baltimore firefighter was injured while responding to another fire in West Baltimore.
