During a recent post-game fireworks display at CarMax Park in Richmond, Virginia, a malfunction caused fireworks to shoot across the field and into the stands. Video footage of the incident, shared by a spectator, shows the unexpected display of sparks alarming attendees.
A spokesperson for the Richmond Flying Squirrels confirmed that no serious injuries occurred as a result of the incident. The Richmond Fire Department was called to the scene to assess the situation.
“The safety of our guests and staff is paramount to us,” the spokesperson stated. The team is currently collaborating with Pyro Shows, the licensed vendor responsible for the fireworks, to investigate the cause of the malfunction and ensure such an event does not happen in the future.
Alyssa Durden, who was attending the game with her family, recorded the incident and described the moment as alarming. “We initially thought they were using a new type of ground-level firework until we saw one hit the bullpen and fly into the stands. Our kids were understandably scared, but thankfully, no one was hurt,” she recounted.
In a statement, Pyro Shows acknowledged the malfunction and confirmed that their technicians followed safety protocols by terminating the fireworks display immediately. They expressed their commitment to working with safety officials to determine the root cause of the incident and to prevent future occurrences.
“Safety has been the cornerstone of our organization for over 50 years,” the statement read, extending apologies to the fans and the Flying Squirrels organization for the distressing event.
