Dennis Jutras, a former Baltimore City teacher of the year, was arrested last month in a sting operation conducted by Chris Hansen, known for his work on the show 'To Catch a Predator.' The incident took place in a Bel Air park, where Jutras was charged with sexual solicitation of a minor.
During his arrest, Jutras claimed he intended to warn a 15-year-old boy about the dangers of meeting older individuals. Handcuffed on a park bench, he stated, "I was hoping to meet this young person and possibly tell them why it’s dangerous to meet with older folks." He expressed concern about being perceived as a threat, insisting that his intentions were to advise the boy against such interactions.
The sting operation, which aired on Hansen's YouTube series 'Takedown with Chris Hansen,' showed Jutras being approached by law enforcement after allegedly exchanging explicit messages with a detective pretending to be a high school student named Aiden. Court documents indicate that the two had discussed sexual encounters prior to the meeting.
Jutras, who served 27 years in the Baltimore City Public Schools, primarily as a social studies teacher and later as a coordinator for gifted programs, is not accused of inappropriate conduct with any students during his tenure. Following his arrest, he was placed on paid administrative leave.
In the interview with Hansen, Jutras defended his actions, claiming he believed the individual he was communicating with was 16 years old, the age of consent in Maryland. He stated that he had never engaged in sexual behavior with anyone underage in his professional capacity as an educator.
Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler noted that this operation was part of a collaboration with Hansen's team, which has resulted in multiple arrests in similar cases. Jutras's arrest has raised concerns given his background in education.
Jutras is currently being held without bond, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 12. The investigation continues, and authorities are examining his electronic devices as part of the case.
