The Maryland attorney general's office has identified Michael MacDougall, a 40-year-old man from Frederick, as the individual who died while in police custody following a car accident on July 1.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. when MacDougall crashed his vehicle into a wooded area along the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. He was subsequently detained by U.S. Park Police officers, who placed him in handcuffs and escorted him from the wooded area to the roadway.
After Greenbelt Police officers arrived at the scene, MacDougall became unresponsive. The officer involved in the incident, identified as Tyler Fahey, has been with the Greenbelt Police Department for four years and is currently on full duty while the investigation into MacDougall's death is underway.
The Maryland attorney general's office, which is responsible for investigating all police-custody deaths in the state, has not yet clarified the specific role Fahey played in the incident. A press release issued on July 15 did not mention any details regarding the Park Police officers who initially responded to the crash.
An online fundraiser has been established to support MacDougall's family, highlighting his recent role as a father to a three-month-old son and noting that he was the primary provider for the child, who was present in the vehicle during the crash.
According to the July 15 press release, the Greenbelt officer was equipped with a body camera, and the police cruiser was fitted with a dashboard camera that recorded the events. The attorney general's Independent Investigations Division typically releases footage of such incidents 20 business days following the event.
