Free Transit Rides Offered Sunday for Rosa Parks' Birthday

BALTIMORE — In celebration of Rosa Parks' birthday, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will offer complimentary rides on all of its services this Sunday, February 4. This initiative coincides with Transit Equity Day, a day dedicated to acknowledging the importance of equitable public transportation.

Residents can enjoy free access to Local Bus, Light Rail, Metro Subway, MARC Train, and Mobility services throughout the day. The MTA encourages riders to take this opportunity to explore its various systems and routes without any fare.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld emphasized the significance of public transit in fostering community inclusivity. “Public transit belongs to everyone,” he stated. “As we honor the incredible legacy of Rosa Parks, the Maryland Department of Transportation strives to make our transit systems more equitable, inclusive and convenient for all Marylanders.”

Rosa Parks is celebrated for her courageous act of defiance in 1955 when she refused to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama, an event that sparked a significant bus boycott and became a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement.

For those unfamiliar with the transit systems, the MTA recommends visiting their website at mta.maryland.gov or utilizing the Transit app to plan their journeys.
