Authorities in Seattle are investigating a deadly shootout that occurred during the annual Bite of Seattle food festival, resulting in three fatalities and several injuries. The incident, which took place near the iconic Space Needle, has raised concerns about gang-related violence.
According to police reports, at least three individuals were involved in the shooting that erupted around 6 p.m. on Sunday. Among the deceased was a 19-year-old shooter, while a 15-year-old has been arrested and is currently being held in juvenile detention on charges related to firearms and first-degree assault.
Nicole Powell, assistant chief of investigations for the Seattle Police Department, indicated that investigators suspect the shooting was the result of a conflict between two gangs, leading to exchanges of gunfire. The police had initially reported two suspects but later confirmed the involvement of a third shooter.
The victims have been identified as Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba, 44; Ashley Whitehead, 56; and Junior Cee Niko Semo, 19. Villalba, a father of three, was remembered for his kindness, while Whitehead, who had recently relocated from Alabama, was enjoying the festival with her daughter when she was shot.
As the chaos unfolded, festival-goers fled the scene in panic, with many seeking refuge in nearby buildings. Witnesses described the atmosphere as chaotic, with individuals running for safety as gunfire erupted.
In total, four other individuals were injured in the shooting, including a toddler, all of whom have since been discharged from the hospital. The King County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the causes of death for the victims, detailing the injuries sustained during the incident.
The investigation continues as police work to gather more information about the suspects and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. A judge has ordered the 15-year-old suspect to remain in custody while the King County prosecutor's office prepares to review the case.
