Governor Moore Promotes Transit-Oriented Development in Baltimore Region

ANAPOLIS, MD — Governor Wes Moore has announced a significant initiative to advance transit-oriented development across the Baltimore region, aimed at enhancing economic growth and reducing housing costs. This announcement was made during a joint press conference with Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott and state transportation officials.

The newly unveiled Baltimore Region Transit-Oriented Development Strategy seeks to secure a development partner for the North parcel of the Rogers Avenue Metro Station, marking a key step in the administration's efforts to improve regional mobility through substantial transit investments.

Governor Moore emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating, “If this is going to be Maryland’s Decade, it has to be Baltimore’s Time.” He highlighted the goal of creating opportunities for residents to live and work near transit, thereby strengthening communities and enhancing economic prospects.

This strategy is part of a broader initiative by the Moore-Miller Administration to modernize the Baltimore Metro and Light Rail systems, which includes a $1.4 billion investment in the Light Rail Modernization Program. This program aims to upgrade the Baltimore Central Light Rail Line with new vehicles and improved infrastructure.

During the press conference, Governor Moore and Mayor Scott took a ride on the new Metro Subway cars, which are part of a $400 million investment that includes the acquisition of 78 new rail cars and an upgraded communication system to enhance reliability.

Mayor Scott remarked on the historical impact of transportation policies on neighborhood investment, stating that the current approach is focused on anchoring housing projects near transit as outlined in the city's comprehensive development plan, 'Our Baltimore.'

Following the press conference, Governor Moore convened a roundtable discussion with business and civic leaders to emphasize the importance of collaboration in advancing transit-oriented development. The discussion highlighted the potential for creating over 5,000 new housing units and generating nearly $1.4 billion in tax revenue from state-owned land development.

Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson noted that realizing transit-oriented development on state-owned land could serve as a catalyst for broader development throughout the region.
