Johns Hopkins Hospital has made history with the appointment of its first all-Black team to lead the Halsted Service in trauma and acute care surgery. This groundbreaking leadership team consists of five talented doctors: Valentine S. Alia, M.D., Lawrence B. Brown, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., Ivy Mannoh, M.D., Zachary Obinna Enumah, M.D., Ph.D., M.A., and Ifeoluwa “Ife” Shoyombo, M.D., M.P.H., M.S.
This milestone is particularly significant in light of the statistics surrounding diversity in the medical field. While Black individuals make up 13.4% of the U.S. population, only 5.6% of surgeons in training are Black, according to the National Institutes of Health.
In a joint statement on social media, Alia and Brown emphasized their commitment to serving the Baltimore community, stating, “We are Black history. We are our ancestors’ wildest dreams. And we’re just getting started.”
Dr. Brown, who is the first physician in his family, expressed his dedication to ensuring that equity is prioritized in patient care and healthcare research. Enumah reflected on his upbringing in a family of medical professionals, stating that his parents' dedication to serving patients inspired him throughout his career.
Shoyombo also shared his enthusiasm for the impact their work can have, encouraging others to pursue their dreams, saying, “To anyone who’s watching, realize that your dream and capacity can only be limited by you. And if you can think it, see it, then you can absolutely reach it.”
