A family in Harford County is grieving the loss of their pets and home following a tragic house fire last week in Belcamp.
Emergency responders from the Abingdon Fire Company were dispatched to the house on Foxglove Court at approximately 5:33 p.m. on Friday after a security company alerted them to the situation.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered significant smoke billowing from the residence. The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office reported that it took 30 firefighters around 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
Investigators concluded the fire was accidental, tracing its origins to a family dog named Bo, who jumped onto the kitchen counter and inadvertently activated the toaster. This action ignited nearby combustible materials. The incident was recorded on a Ring camera, providing crucial evidence for the investigation.
While two dogs were saved by neighbors, including Bo, three other pets tragically lost their lives in the fire: a dog named Dakota and two cats, Casey and Beth.
In a small relief for the family, a bearded dragon named Yoda was discovered alive after the fire was extinguished and is expected to recover fully.
The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damages, prompting the establishment of a GoFundMe campaign to assist the family with necessities such as clothing, toiletries, bedding, food, and pet supplies.
