Drivers on northbound Interstate 97 should be aware of upcoming overnight lane closures as maintenance crews work on repairs to pavement damaged during the heat wave in early July.
The pavement buckled on July 3, leading to significant traffic delays in the northbound lanes between Benfield Boulevard and New Cut Road. Emergency repairs were completed quickly, allowing the highway to reopen before the holiday weekend.
The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) has scheduled three consecutive overnight closures for more permanent repairs. Starting Sunday night, two northbound lanes near Exit 12 will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. On Tuesday night, all northbound lanes will be closed during the same hours. Motorists will be detoured at Exit 10 before re-entering I-97.
Closure Schedule
- July 12-13: Two northbound lanes closed, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- July 14: All northbound lanes closed, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The SHA advises drivers to plan ahead and exercise caution while navigating through the work zone.
