Videos depicting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arresting a mother and father on the grounds of Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore have incited significant backlash from school officials and local leaders.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning as children were being dropped off for school. Principal Marc Martin expressed his disappointment in a letter to parents, stating that the school community was "significantly impacted" by the disruption and emphasized that families should be able to engage with their schools without fear of arrest.

Maryland State Senator Bill Ferguson described the actions of ICE as "truly unconscionable," noting that the arrests coincided with a pre-K graduation ceremony.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified one of the individuals arrested as Jesus Acevedo-Sanchez, claiming that the situation began outside the school premises. According to DHS, Acevedo-Sanchez resisted arrest and attempted to evade law enforcement, resulting in an ICE officer being dragged by his vehicle. They also alleged that this was not his first encounter with law enforcement, citing a previous incident in April.

In addition to Acevedo-Sanchez, a second individual in the vehicle allegedly assaulted officers and is facing charges for assaulting a federal officer.

Following the arrests, the children of the detained parents were placed in the custody of their aunt. Local families are now left to navigate the anxiety surrounding school attendance amid fears of potential immigration enforcement actions.

City and state officials condemned the ICE operation, highlighting previous assurances that immigration enforcement would not occur in school settings. Maryland Governor Wes Moore recently signed legislation aimed at bolstering protections against federal immigration enforcement in sensitive locations, including schools.

DHS spokesperson Lauren Bis stated that while ICE does not target schools, they will act against individuals who pose a threat to public safety. Bis claimed that the agency had coordinated with school officials to minimize disruption during the incident.

Videos circulating on social media show the chaotic scene, with bystanders expressing concern for the children present. One bus driver reported that a student feared she would also be taken by the agents.

Principal Martin reiterated the school district's commitment to advocating for the safety and dignity of all students and families, and he is working with local ICE officials to prevent similar incidents in the future.
