ICE Detains Parents at Baltimore School Drop-off

In a distressing incident on Thursday morning, a mother and father were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents just outside a Baltimore school, disrupting the morning routine for students and parents alike.

Witnesses reported seeing ICE agents detain the father on school property at Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School, where children were arriving for the day. The scene unfolded as students walked past the agents, who were seen wrestling the father to the ground while a child inside a vehicle cried out in distress.

This event marks a troubling first for Baltimore since the start of a renewed immigration enforcement strategy under the current administration, which has drawn criticism for its aggressive tactics. Officials from the Maryland State Department of Education expressed their dismay, noting that they had previously received assurances from the Baltimore ICE Field Office that such actions would not occur on school grounds.

Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Carey Wright and State Board of Education President Joshua Michael condemned the incident, emphasizing that schools should remain safe havens for children and families. The joint statement highlighted the historical precedent of schools as sensitive locations where immigration enforcement should be avoided.

Governor Wes Moore also reacted strongly, stating that his administration is in communication with ICE to understand how this situation arose and to prevent future occurrences. He remarked that actions that instill fear among children and families do not contribute to public safety.

Video footage from the scene showed agents in vests marked “POLICE ICE” as they attempted to detain the father, with bystanders expressing concern for the family involved. The situation escalated as agents confronted the mother in the car, leading to further distress for the child present.

Local law enforcement was called to the school shortly after the incident began, but by the time they arrived, the ICE agents had already left the scene with the individuals they had detained. School officials later communicated with parents, assuring them that while the incident was distressing for some, the school community remained safe.

In response to the incident, the Baltimore City school system reiterated its opposition to immigration enforcement actions on school grounds and pledged to advocate for the safety and dignity of all students and families.
