The Maryland Attorney General's office has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding an in-custody death that occurred along the Baltimore-Washington Parkway late Wednesday night.
According to the attorney general's office, the incident took place around 10 p.m. in Greenbelt. The investigation was activated as part of the office's protocol for all deaths that occur in police custody within the state.
Reports indicate that U.S. Park Police observed a vehicle leave the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and subsequently crash into a wooded area along Southway, a road that connects to the parkway. The Park Police requested emergency assistance and called in the Greenbelt Police.
Upon their arrival, Greenbelt officers found that the Park Police had already placed the driver of the vehicle in handcuffs. They escorted him from the wooded area to the roadway. However, while in custody, the driver became unresponsive.
As of now, the identities of the deceased individual and the involved officers have not been disclosed. A spokesperson for the Park Police has refrained from commenting due to the ongoing investigation.
Importantly, an infant was present in the driver's vehicle at the time of the incident but was reported to be unharmed.
